Getting started
Create an account with your e-mail (and confirm it), or with Google or Apple, and you're in your studio. Drop audio files anywhere on the page, or press Upload. You can upload WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, M4A, AAC, OGG and Opus, and each file up to 250 MB is measured for loudness as it uploads. A 16, 24 or 32-bit AIFF is stored as a WAV with the very same samples, so it plays in every browser.
Folders
Press New folder in your library. One folder per client or project works well. Drag songs onto a folder to move them; their links and notes go with them.
Sharing a song or a folder
The link icon on a song copies its link. In a folder, Share folder copies a link to everything in it, and that link always shows the latest bounces. Listeners don't need an account, and links open with a proper preview in WhatsApp and iMessage.
Notes and replies
Anyone with the link can pause anywhere and write a note; it pins to that second, and clicking it jumps there. You can reply under any note and mark it done when it's fixed. Your latest notes from listeners on all songs are on the Notes page, and every note is in the spreadsheet under Settings › Account › Your data. You get one e-mail with new notes once the listener pauses, at most every 30 minutes (turn that off in Settings › Notifications).
Approvals
Listeners can press Approve this mix on a song. Their name shows with the approval, and it resets when you upload a new version.
Versions
On a song's page, press New version (or drop a file on a song) to put the next bounce under the same link. Listeners can switch between versions while the song plays, and notes stay with the version they're about. Select several songs and press Make versions to turn them into one song with versions.
Link passwords, end dates and turning links off
On the Shared links page, the gear on a link sets a password or an end date. You can also turn a link off, or replace it: the old address stops working and the new one has the same song and notes.
Downloads
Listeners can only stream until you allow downloads, per track or with Allow downloads on new uploads. When songs in a folder allow downloads, listeners can take those songs as one zip, up to 40 songs and 4 GB per folder (subfolders included). When a listener downloads a song, or a folder as a zip, through one of your links, you get an e-mail, at most one every 10 minutes (turn that off in Settings › Notifications).
E-mails
Settings › Notifications has a switch for each e-mail: new notes and replies, approvals, downloads through your links, and files sent to your upload link. E-mails about your account (confirming your address, resetting or changing your password, deleting your account, and the warning when your storage is almost full) always go. Receipts and invoices for Pro come from Paddle.
Getting files from clients (Pro)
Open Incoming in the sidebar and press Make and copy my link. You get a link of your own, like finalmix.io/send/yourname: send it to anyone. They open it, type their name, and drop audio files, a whole folder or a zip (it's opened in their browser, and only the audio inside is sent). They don't need an account. Several files arrive in Incoming in a folder named after them and the day; a single file arrives in Incoming on its own, as a song. Either way you get an e-mail saying who sent what (turn that off in Settings › Notifications). An AIFF they send is stored as a WAV with the very same samples. What they send counts toward your storage. One send takes up to 500 files and 50 GB. Files from different folders of theirs that share a name get the folder's name in front, like "Song B - Kick.wav". On Incoming you can copy the link, change its address (the old one stops working) or turn it off. In Incoming you can listen to a song and download it: its waveform shows as soon as you open it. Notes, new versions, share links, file details and loudness come once you move it into one of your folders. To file a send away, press Move to… on its folder (or on the song, for a single file) and pick a client's folder, or make one there; links to it keep working.
More in how to get stems from clients.
Getting something back
Deleted songs and folders wait on the Deleted page for 30 days. Deleted holds up to your plan's storage; past that, the oldest go first, and anything bigger than that is deleted for good straight away. Restore puts one back where it was, with its notes, versions and link; Delete forever removes it sooner.
When an upload stops
If the connection drops, press Try again on the upload. A new song over 64 MB picks up where it left off; a smaller file, or a new version, is sent again from the start. If the page was closed while a file over 64 MB was uploading, your library says which upload didn't finish; pick the same file again within 20 hours and it picks up from there.
Downloading your data
Settings › Account › Your data downloads the latest version of every song, folder by folder in zips, and every note as a spreadsheet. Earlier versions aren't included.
